Field Trip - Stream Monitoring Training
Join us at the stream to learn and practice the Virginia Save Our Streams benthic macroinvertebrate sampling protocol on Tuesday, February 11th from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m.. Virginia Save Our Streams is a community science program of the Izaak Walton League of America in which hundreds of certified volunteers collect macroinvertebrate data from hundreds of streams across Virginia. By identifying which macroinvertebrates live in a local stream, volunteers can calculate a stream health score, which is passed on to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. To become a certified monitor, you must watch three online webinars, pass an online macroinvertebrate identification exam, and attend a field training – which this field trip can count as for any who are interested. If you’d like to become certified, you must complete the online videos and exam, which you can access here, prior to the field trip. Visit the Virginia Save Our Streams website to learn more.
There is no cost for this training. However, space is limited, so please reserve your spot. Dress appropriately for being outside in February and bring waterproof boots. Some boots are available to borrow. Training will be canceled if really heavy rain precedes the conference or if it is below 30 degrees F.
